Plain English open training courses are held at the Monkhouse Granary in Shropshire. The one-day courses run from 10am to 4.30pm. Winter programme dates are:

  • Tuesday 24 January 2012
  • Tuesday 21 February 2012
  • Tuesday 13 March 2012

The course covers the following points during the morning session:

  • the reasons for plain English
  • understanding the different target groups (disabled people, black and minority ethnic people, young and older people)
  • basic problems - long words, long sentences, confused meaning
  • basic grammar
  • spoken and written English

The first part of the afternoon session brings all these into play with an exercise designed to build up editing skills using Robert Gunning's FOG Index. This is a popular part of the course and helps demonstrate how long words, long and passive sentences and surplus information can have an impact on the readability of a passage.

The second part of the afternoon session also answers some common questions: how to use a colon, when to use capital letters, use of the apostrophe and so on.

SCPR's partnership with the Monkhouse Granary provides a convenient, value for money solution to your training needs. Set in a beautiful rural location, with excellent road and rail links and quality hotels on the doorstep, you have everything you need for the perfect learning environment. Home cooked food, fresh from the nearby farm, is also included in the price.

The open course costs £165 per person plus VAT with huge savings for multiple bookings. Companies wishing to train 10 or more members of staff can book at a special discounted rate for sole use.

Monkhouse Granary is located on the outskirts of Shrewsbury on the Ellesmere Road (A528) directly opposite the Albrighton Hall Hotel.

There is plenty of parking at the venue, and it is only a five-minute drive from the centre of Shrewsbury and the train station.
